Senior Product Excellence Engineer
Job Description
This is a pivotal role within the Product Excellence team, responsible for driving product quality, risk management, and technical excellence as we industrialise current products and develop next-generation cell technologies.
The Senior Product Excellence Engineer leads the development and continuous evolution of Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA), ensuring robust identification, assessment, and mitigation of product risks across the lifecycle. This includes ownership of product Special Characteristics definition and cascade, enabling clear transition of critical-to-quality requirements into manufacturing and quality systems.
Acting as a central technical authority, the role requires deep understanding of cell design, materials, and failure mechanisms, with the ability to connect design intent to product performance and risk. You will work cross-functionally with Cell Design, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality teams to ensure risks are proactively managed and controlled.
The role also plays a key part in structured problem solving, supporting and guiding 8D investigations to resolve complex product and process issues. This includes ensuring robust cause identification is technically robust and that corrective actions effectively mitigate recurrence.
As the organisation scales, this position is critical is embedding a risk-based, data-driven approach to product excellence, ensuring that both current and future products are safe, reliable, and manufacturable at scale.
This is a high-impact role requiring strong technical depth and the ability to influence across functions to deliver robust, high-quality products to market.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Own and continuously develop DFMEAs in accordance with AIAG V5 methodology, ensuring risks are comprehensively identified, assessed, and mitigated across the product lifecycle.
- Interface closely with cell design, manufacturing engineering and quality teams to identify, assess, and mitigate failure modes and degradation mechanisms.
- Define and cascade product Special Characteristics, ensuring clear translation of critical product requirements into manufacturing controls.
- Champion product quality and continuous improvement, embedding best practices and lessons learned into future designs.
- Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams to resolve complex product issues, applying structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, 5Why, etc.) to ensure robust root cause identification and sustainable corrective actions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of product excellence processes, standards, and best practices.
- Ensure compliance with relevant ISO standards, quality systems, and internal requirements.
- Support knowledge transfer and capability building across teams, strengthening organisational understanding of product risk and failure mechanisms.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Degree in Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience within a Tier 1 cell manufacturer or equivalent advanced battery development environment.
- Certification in Six Sigma (Black Belt preferred), with demonstrated application in root cause analysis, variation reduction, and process improvement.
- Strong technical understanding of lithium-ion cell design, architecture, materials, and performance.
- Extensive experience developing and maintaining DFMEAs using AIAG V5 methodology.
- Strong experience leading structured problem-solving (8D, Ishikawa, 5Why) on complex technical issues.
- Deep knowledge of APQP principles, including the integration of DFMEA, PFMEA, and product validation.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to influence technical discussions.
- High attention to detail, strong analytical capability, and structured thinking mindset.
Desired
- PhD related to lithium-ion batteries.
- Proficient in working with APIS IQ Software.
- Experience with PLM systems.
