Job Description: Biomedical Engineer

Position Title: Biomedical Engineer / Medical Equipment Engineer

Department: Biomedical Engineering (BME) / Maintenance & Operations

Reports To: Head of Biomedical Engineering / Hospital Operations Manager / Medical Superintendent

Job Purpose

The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and optimal performance of all medical equipment and technology across the hospital. This role covers the entire equipment lifecycle—from procurement evaluation and installation to routine preventive maintenance, rapid calibration, troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance to ensure zero downtime in critical care areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Equipment Maintenance & Calibration
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedules across all medical devices (ventilators, monitors, MRI/CT, dialysis, OT suites, etc.).
  • Execute rapid breakdown maintenance and electrical safety testing to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for specialized maintenance, major overhauls, and annual calibration.
  • Procurement & Installation Management
  • Evaluate technical specifications for new medical equipment in coordination with clinical heads and management.
  • Oversee pre-installation site preparedness, unboxing, installation, and final Commissioning & Acceptance Testing (CAT).
  • Manage Service Level Agreements (SLAs), Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs), and Comprehensive Maintenance Contracts (CMCs).
  • Clinical Support & Staff Training
  • Conduct practical orientation and continuous training for doctors, nursing staff, and technicians on proper equipment handling and basic troubleshooting.
  • Provide real-time technical support during critical medical procedures or emergency operations when technical faults occur.
  • Quality Control & NABH Compliance
  • Maintain comprehensive asset registers, maintenance logs, breakdown histories, and calibration certificates.
  • Ensure full compliance with NABH / JCI standards, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) guidelines (for radiology), and national medical device safety regulations.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for medical device-related adverse events or near-misses.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: B.E. / B.Tech or Diploma in Biomedical Engineering or Medical Electronics.
  • Experience: 1-4 years of operational experience within a hospital setting or medical device service sector.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • In-depth understanding of ICU, OT, Radiology, and Diagnostic equipment architecture.
    • Hands-on expertise with test instruments (patient simulators, electrical safety analyzers, flow meters).
    • Familiarity with Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Soft Skills: Strong analytical problem-solving skills, ability to remain calm in emergency/OT environments, clear technical communication, and vendor management ability.
