Job Summary

The Consultant – SAP ABAP is responsible for delivering end-to-end SAP technical solutions, including design, development, and implementation. This role requires strong hands-on expertise in ABAP, the ability to handle complex requirements, and active collaboration with functional and business stakeholders. The consultant is expected to work independently, contribute to project success, and mentor junior team members.

This position is specifically for SAP Business Workflow development. The consultant is expected to design, build and support approval and process-automation workflows, and to own live diagnostics of agent determination, deadlines and stuck work items.

Key Skills

• 3-6 years of hands-on SAP ABAP development experience, with at least 1-2 years of hands-on SAP Business Workflow development.
• Hands-on workflow development using Workflow Builder (SWDD) - tasks, steps, containers and binding, conditions, loops, forks and deadline monitoring.
• Business objects and ABAP classes used in workflow, event creation and linkage, and use of the event trace when a workflow does not trigger.
• Agent determination using rules, organisational structure and responsibilities; default, possible and excluded agents.
• Synchronous and asynchronous tasks and terminating events, and when each is the correct design.
• Workflow configuration and the background jobs that drive deadline monitoring and error recovery.
• SAP Fiori My Inbox integration, decision options and notifications.
• Flexible Workflow in S/4HANA - scenario activation, preconditions and step configuration.
• Production support - analysing work item logs, restarting errored work items, and resolving agent determination failures.
• Reports (ALV and classical), Data Dictionary objects, data migration programs, and enhancements using BAdIs, enhancement spots and user exits.
• Object-Oriented ABAP (Design Patterns) - classes, interfaces, inheritance and exception handling.
• Debugging, code optimisation and performance tuning.
• SAP development standards, unit testing, code review and transport management.
• Good understanding of code pushdown and how to write database-efficient ABAP on SAP HANA.
• ABAP Development Tools (Eclipse) along with SAP GUI - optional.
  
  

Good to Have

• BRF+ for agent determination and precondition logic.
• Attachment and document handling through Generic Object Services (GOS) and ArchiveLink.
• SAP Fiori / SAPUI5 awareness for end-to-end troubleshooting.
• SAP certification in ABAP.
  
  

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse functional specifications and approval matrices, prepare technical designs, and raise gaps or clarifications before development starts.
• Validate escalation, substitution, delegation and deadline rules with the business before build starts.
• Develop, unit test and document workflows and supporting ABAP objects as per SAP development standards.
• Build workflows so that production behaviour is diagnosable - clear step descriptions and documented agent rules.
• Work with functional consultants and business users to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Own workflow production support - stuck and errored work items, agent determination failures and controlled restart.
• Resolve SIT, UAT and post-go-live defects within agreed timelines and record the correct root cause.
• Participate in code reviews and ensure quality standards are met before transport release.
• Prepare technical documentation and support knowledge transfer to the support team.
• Support the full project lifecycle including implementation and support.

• Excellent oral and written communication; able to explain a technical position clearly and concisely.
• Understands business processes for the modules in scope and the touch points between them.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to research and work through detail.
• Ability to interpret requirements and apply SAP best practices instead of replicating legacy design.
• Aptitude for working in a team, strong time management, and collaboration with all levels of staff.
• Ability to work independently on assigned deliverables and guide junior team members.
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent.
• At least one full-cycle SAP implementation or a substantial support and enhancement engagement.
• Experience on SAP S/4HANA - preferred.
• Willingness to travel to client locations and work shifts aligned to client geography.
